This mantle can be used and converted into a variety of items. The three most common are: 1) Mantle, 2) Aventail 3) collar 4) Voiders and gambeson edging
1)A Mantle is a great way of protecting your upper shoulders from direct blows. 2)An Aventail is attached to a helmet and protects the neck and shoulders. 3)A Collar is similar to a mantle but laces up on the neck covering it. It can have a backing of leather. 4) Voiders are generally the maile that is attached directly to parts of the gambeson that protect areas that are not covered by plate armour. Usually these are under the arms, the inside elbow and back of the knee. Also, an edge of maile is sometimes attached to the bottom edge of a gambeson to give the illusion of maile being worn under a gambeson (without the damned weight!)
Mantles were a popular form of armour for all classes of warriors as it provided efficient protection for some of the most struck places. Poor soldiers could easily carry and afford it (or more likely pick it up from the dead knight with the rondel dagger through his eyeslot!).
Knights would often wear it for extra protection, especially under the helmet to protect the neck from rondel dagger wielding infantry.
For the modern re-enactor this is an excellent way of getting low weight but high visability maile.
This is butted 7mm round wire that has been Zinc coated to provide a rust free look for years to come.
