Utilising a grande assiette sleeve this historical technique from the 14th Century was designed to allow for full arm movement above the shoulders. They become popular in the time of Charles VI of France and continued through to the early Tudor period in England. This is a medium gambeson photographed where I would usually wear an XL, so the sizes are generous. Grande assiette styles of gambesons were designed to be as close fitting as possible so that the gambeson acts like a second skin.
Fitting can be a problem with off the shelf clothes, so we can only do our best to provide standard sizing, please choose carefully as no refunds or exchanges can be given unless the item is defective. We would always recommend taking clothing items to a seamstress familiar with medieval clothes for perfect alterations.
It is constructed out of 100% cotton, outer and inner, so it will breathe and allow heat to escape. This is a medium padded gambeson, excellent for under armour or for single sword work. It can be machine washed, but like all cotton it may fade or shrink with hot water.
The buttons are made from cloth in a period fashion. This is superior to metal or bone buttons as they are harder to strike off, will not lose their shape and are easy to make yourself as a replacement.
