A maile coif is either worn under a helmet or as stand-alone armour. Ideally these should be worn over a padded cotton coif.
Maile coifs were in use from about the 7th century through to the end of the middle ages. The provided good protection from a variety of weapons including arrows, sling bullets, and grazing shots from swords.
Usually they were worn in the early middle ages with a skull cap like the classic 'Norman' style helm.
The advent of more efficient ranged weapons (from the crusades and crossbows) cause the helmet to become a more elaborate affair with the open face portion gradually becoming smaller.
This relegated the coif to becoming secondary armour. Gradually the coif became an aventail which was attached to the outside of the helmet and protected the neck, thus removing the unnecessary weight of maile under the helm.
The coif we offer here is made from 6mm round links that are butted and zinc coated. Butted gives the effect of authentic maile without the cost involved in construction.
We Zinc coat so that you don't have to worry about rust for many many years.
